After struggling to easily find the right items to furnish her own apartment Kuldea Co-Founder, Deirdre Mc Gettrick was inspired to create an online search engine to make home shopping as straightforward, efficient and fulfilling as possible. Here she shares her top tips for choosing your Christmas home décor theme.
The festive season is nearly upon us so we now have crucial decisions in front of us to make such as: Who’s making the starter on Christmas Day or how many mince pies are too many mince pies to eat in one day? (The answer is there’s no such thing). More importantly our thoughts turn to Christmas décor – specifically, our home Christmas décor theme.
Choosing a Christmas décor theme can be just as overwhelming as decorating the house itself – so with that said, we’ve brought together our top five tips on choosing decorations that not only look stylish but represent you, your traditions and suit your home perfectly.
Top tip 1) What Is Your Personal Style?
By taking a look around your home as it currently stands, you’ll be able to get an understanding of your personal interior style – for example, are you contemporary and clutter-free? Do you love country cottage with shabby chic finishes? Perhaps you’re eclectic and not afraid to use colour? By incorporating your personal style, you will buy pieces that will last years to come, as well as effortlessly reflecting your personality – something every home interior should do.
Top tip 2) Source Inspiration
OK, so perhaps you understand your own style, but you’re still looking for inspiration. Pinterest is an amazing source for Christmas ideas, especially around October as content creators start to share their new ideas early to help you plan ahead. You can search for pretty much anything, including how to decorate your fireplace, blue colour combinations for Christmas, and table setting ideas. Instagram is also a great place to find ideas – just search hashtags such as…
…for a plethora of inspiration.
Top tip 3) Choose A Colour Scheme
Colour combinations are potentially the biggest element to any successful Christmas décor theme, and if done right, the results can be amazing. Of course, you can go down the traditional route of greens, reds and golds, throwing in some candy cane stripes and tartan. How about a modern Scandi twist in monochrome with natural woods, acorns and faux fur? Or a neutral scheme in greys, taupes and silvers (we love this Snowflake Bauble Hand Embroidered Cushion from CFS, for example). One of the biggest décor trends we’re seeing this Christmas is the use of peacock blue, against jewelled green and dustings of gold. Perhaps you even want to embrace your home’s colour scheme and create a cohesive look throughout the property. The key is to choose three colours that work well together, making sure one of those is a metallic of some kind to create balance.
Top tip 4) What Does Your Current Collection Need?
Unless this is your very first Christmas in your own home (if so, congratulations!), you’ll no doubt have some form of collection gathering dust somewhere. If you’re anything like us, you’ll have forgotten what decorations you bought last year so before making any decisions, take a look at your current collection, work out what you can use for your new theme and what needs to be purchased. This is a great idea for those looking to create a Christmas theme on a budget – not everything needs to be new and not everything needs to be mass-produced. There are pieces in our collection that are handmade, evoke memories from our childhood that we want to remember, and are part of our annual Christmas traditions – so much so that, even if they don’t “match the theme”, we get them out year after year.
Top tip 5) Start With The Tree
At the core of every beautiful Christmas, theme stands a tree. A narrow space-saving tree. Snow flocked faux tree. An oversized, too-big-for-the-boot, real Christmas tree which leans proudly in the corner. Start the search now for those decorations that match your theme, such as Scandinavian wooden stars, bold and bright baubles, glamourous beads instead of tinsel, or peacock feathers. It’s little details like this that give your theme a wow moment. Once you’ve built your tree décor collection, look around the home for other places to add your magic to. How about wrapping a garland around the bannister, or stockings from the fireplace? A mini Christmas tree in the guest bedroom, nutcracker wooden toys lining the hallway console table, a playful Christmas doormat, and don’t forget the wreath on the front door to hint at your Christmas theme inside.
We hope these tips help you to create a Christmas theme that excites, inspires and welcomes this festive season. Without sounding like a total cliché, when you’re passionate about creating a beautiful home, Christmas really can be the most wonderful time of the year.
